What is MODO?
These instructions are reviewed against the app source. Final-installer walkthroughs are still pending. Check platform availability and requirements before installing. Windows is an updates list, outside the 1,000 beta places.
MODO is a desktop design tool for building responsive websites and native app interfaces from a local, editable project. Work visually with frames, layers, components, design tokens, content and animation, then preview or generate an output.
Your project lives on your computer. An AI agent, hosting provider or remote CMS is not required to design and save it.
Follow the project through MODO
- Create: choose a website with responsive frames; optionally add a free design playground.
- Design: arrange layers, reuse components and tokens, and adapt secondary breakpoints.
- Add content: import your media and fonts or use the local CMS.
- Try it: use Preview for page interactions and playback. The editing canvas keeps media paused so it remains easy to select.
- Save: let accepted edits persist locally, and save named
.modocopies at useful milestones. - Deliver: export a website, native source, a reusable package or a design exchange. Publishing to another service is a separate, confirmed action.
Choose the right output
| You want to… | Use… |
|---|---|
| Keep an editable, portable MODO project | A .modo copy |
| Put a website on your own server | Web export to Folder or ZIP |
| Deploy through a supported host | Publish → Web |
| Give a developer a project, tokens or component package | GitHub & export |
| Move supported design layers between MODO and Figma | Figma design exchange |
| Build a native iOS or Android app | Native export/build with the required platform tools |
| Keep shared snapshots in your own cloud | Personal cloud & versions |
| Edit the same canvas with teammates | A configured live collaboration service |
A website ZIP is not your editable project. A component export is not automatically a React component. A Figma exchange is not a lossless backup. Keep a .modo copy alongside deliverables.
What “offline” means
After the initial online activation, local editing, bundled media, local fonts, saving, recovery and local web export can work without an internet connection. Newly requested Google Fonts need to be downloaded first. Native dependencies may need an initial download.
Signing in on a new device, sending a report, remote publishing, GitHub delivery, cloud transfer and online collaboration need their respective services. An agent may also send context to its own service; its connection policy is separate from MODO's local project storage.
About this alpha
These guides describe the implemented app as reviewed on 20 October 2026. A Mac Apple Silicon candidate has been signed and notarized, and email sign-in has worked with the live service. The updated installer, its full release checks and installation on another Mac remain in preparation. Windows testing is deferred; earlier Linux ARM64 tests do not certify the latest beta access flow.
Start with installation and access, then your first website.
